M3U player: how to play an M3U or M3U8 playlist

An M3U playlist is a text file of channel names and stream links. To watch it, open the link or the file in an IPTV player. Rhoe plays M3U and M3U8 playlists for free, with channel groups, logos and an optional TV guide.

The short answer

To play an M3U playlist, open an IPTV player, choose “M3U playlist”, and paste the playlist link or import the .m3u / .m3u8 file. The player reads the list, shows your channels grouped into sections, and plays whichever one you pick.

  • Rhoe accepts an HTTPS playlist link or an imported file.
  • Add your provider's XMLTV link as well if you want a programme guide.
  • If your link contains get.php?username=…&password=…, you probably have an Xtream Codes login, which unlocks films and series too.

What is an M3U playlist?

M3U is a plain-text playlist format. For IPTV, each channel takes two lines: an #EXTINF line describing the channel, and the stream address underneath it. A short playlist looks like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.example" tvg-name="Example News" tvg-logo="https://example.com/news.png" group-title="News",Example News
https://stream.example.com/live/news/index.m3u8
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="nature.example" tvg-chno="12" group-title="Documentary",Example Nature
https://stream.example.com/live/nature/index.m3u8

The first line, #EXTM3U, marks the file as an extended playlist. The attributes on each #EXTINF line are optional extras that good players use to build a nicer channel list.

M3U vs M3U8: what's the difference?

They are the same playlist format. M3U8 simply means the file is saved as UTF-8 text, so channel names in any language display correctly. For an IPTV channel list, treat the two the same way.

One catch: HLS video streams also use .m3u8 files — but those describe the chunks of one stream, not a list of channels. If your .m3u8 link plays a single channel instead of listing many, add it in Rhoe as a Direct stream.

How to play an M3U playlist in Rhoe

  1. Install Rhoe from the download page and open it.
  2. Choose “M3U playlist” as the connection type.
  3. Paste the playlist link your provider sent, or import the file if you were given a .m3u or .m3u8 attachment. An imported file is copied into the app's private storage.
  4. Optionally paste an XMLTV guide link to see what is on now and next.
  5. Pick a channel. Your channels appear grouped into sections, with logos where the playlist provides them.

On a TV, you do not have to type the link with the remote: sign in to Rhoe on the TV and send the playlist from your phone. The TV guide covers how.

How Rhoe reads your playlist

Playlist tagWhat Rhoe does with it
group-titleGroups channels into sections, such as News or Sport
tvg-logoShows the channel logo in the list and player
tvg-chnoUses it as the channel number; otherwise channels are numbered in playlist order
tvg-nameUses it as the channel name, falling back to the text after the comma
tvg-idMatches the channel to its programme in the XMLTV guide

M3U connections in Rhoe are for live TV. A playlist has no structured film or series catalogue, so the Video Club appears only for Xtream Codes connections.

Adding a TV guide to an M3U playlist

A bare playlist carries no schedule. Most providers publish a separate XMLTV guide link — sometimes written inside the playlist as url-tvg="…" on the first line. Copy that link into the XMLTV field of your M3U connection. Channels are matched on tvg-id, then on name. The IPTV EPG guide explains matching in detail.

M3U playlist not working?

“Couldn't connect” when adding the link

Rhoe's release builds require https:// for playlist and guide links, because those links usually contain your password. An http://-only link will be refused by design; ask your provider for an HTTPS address. Also check the link has not expired by opening your provider's own account page.

The playlist loads but channels do not play

Your list is fine; the streams are being refused. Common causes are a connection limit already used on another device, an IP-locked subscription after your address changed, or a single channel being off air. Try two or three channels to tell them apart.

The playlist is huge and slow

Very large playlists — tens of thousands of entries — take longer to download and parse on a phone or TV. Many providers can generate a smaller playlist containing only the groups you watch.

Sound but no picture on a 4K channel

That is usually HEVC video in a desktop browser, which most browsers cannot decode. The Android, Android TV and iPhone apps play it normally.

Questions

Can I play an M3U file saved on my phone?

Yes. Choose M3U playlist and import the .m3u or .m3u8 file. Rhoe copies it into the app's private storage and removes it when you sign out.

Why don't films and series show up with my M3U playlist?

A playlist is a flat list of streams, so Rhoe treats M3U connections as live TV. If your provider also gave you a server URL, username and password, add an Xtream Codes connection instead to get the full film and series library.

Is Rhoe a free M3U player?

Yes. Rhoe is free to download and use, with no ads and no in-app purchase needed to play a playlist. You only pay your provider.

Can VLC play an M3U playlist?

VLC can open an M3U file as a plain playlist, which is useful for testing a link. A dedicated IPTV player adds the parts VLC does not aim to provide: channel sections, a now-and-next guide from XMLTV, recent channels and remote-friendly TV navigation.

Where do I get an M3U playlist?

From the service you subscribe to, or from a broadcaster that publishes its own free streams. Rhoe does not provide playlists; only add sources you have the right to watch.
